BIG IDEA:
ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS:
OVERVIEW:
Fracking is the process of drilling and injecting fluid at high pressure, usually water, into the ground. The pressure fractures shale rocks to release natural gas. This process allows for the removal of natural gas at higher rates than other processes. The process is economical and allows for extraction of gas that was previously inaccessible. The process does have many opponents who are worried about the environmental and human risks associated with the process.
GOAL:
You are a member of community advocacy group concerned about potential energy projects in your region. Your region is part of the Marcellus Shale formation. Your task is to learn about the projects, specifically fracking, and determine your beliefs regarding the initiative. Once you have made your decision you will need to create a public awareness campaign to educate the public and decision-makers regarding this process and the impact on your region.
ROLE:
You are an environmental engineer and head of a regional public advocacy group. Your group's role is to protect the regional environment and attempt to minimize human influences on the environment for humans and other living things.
AUDIENCE:
Your audience will be those attending a town hall meeting related to permits for gas wells using fracking techniques within the region. Members of the audience will include energy executives, scientists from the energy companies, public officials, and citizens of the region.

Once you have concluded your research, you will want to encourage people to attend the public meeting to voice their opinions of the permits and project. You will need to help educate them prior to the meeting so they support your stance.
PRODUCT: Poster
Create a poster that will be distributed to businesses throughout the community. The poster should invite people to attend the public meeting. Within the poster, briefly highlight your findings and include symbolism that supports these findings. The poster should engage the viewer and make them want to attend the meeting and support your stance.
