BIG IDEA:
Some questions can be answered by collecting, representing, and analyzing data, and the question to be answered determines the data to be collected, how best to collect it, and how best to represent it.
A technological world requires that humans develop capabilities to solve technological challenges and improve products for the way we live.
Spatial reasoning and visualization are ways to orient thinking about the physical world.
ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS:
How would you apply technological design and problem-solving methods to the development of inventions and innovations?
How do artists use tools and techniques to convey emotion and evoke emotional response?
How can we gather, record, and organize information, and how does the type of data influence the choice of display?
OVERVIEW:
As an efficiency expert you have the opportunity to work with regional zoos to maximize their efficiency. This entails researching the day-to-day operations involved in running a zoo, along with investigating layouts that may be more conducive to their space. You will need to create a budget that details all aspects of your findings. This budget will have to be compared to the existing budget to show the savings for the zoo.
GOAL:
As an efficiency expert, your goal is to design a plan that will make zoos run more efficiently. This plan involves researching the day-to-day operations involved in running a zoo, and utilizing the latest technologies to create a dynamic marketing pitch to zoo executives across the region.
ROLE:
You are an efficiency expert that wants to expand your services to regional zoos. You will be researching day-to-day operations involved in running a zoo in order to create a plan for zoo executives that will help their zoo to run more efficiently. You will be developing a marketing pitch that will include components of your efficiency plan. You will have the opportunity to provide suggestions regarding staffing and redesigning the layout of their zoo.
AUDIENCE:
Your audience will be zoo executives hoping to maximize efficiency within their zoos in order to either save money or expand their establishment.

PRODUCT INTRODUCTION:
Your audience requires you to create a variety of products that will be a critical part of your presentation. These people are looking for you to be creative and innovative in your designs and presentation. Some or all of the products below may be required by the members of the audience.
PRODUCTS:
Research Paper/Report
Pick three different animals that live in the zoo. Research the daily nutritional needs of each type of animal (i.e. how much does it need to eat and what nutrients does it require.) Once you have found the requirements of each animal, research the different food sources that could be used to provide that animal with proper nutrition within the amount of caloric intake. As an extension of this project you may attempt to find different websites that sell the type of food you need and provide cost analysis of each site (i.e. which one gives the best deal?).
Budget Analysis
Go online and research all of the things that zoos must plan for in their budget. Create a list of all of the items that you find and then rank them in order from most important to least important. Be prepared to explain the reasons why you ranked the items in the order that you did.
Oral Presentation
Your task is to design a 3-5 minute presentation that discusses ways that zoos could save money when budgets are cut. Your top priority needs to be the safety and health of the animals. Your second priority should be the quality of the zoo experience for your guests. A good place to start would be by making a list of all of the items that a zoo pays for that could be cut and ranking them in order of importance. Be prepared to defend your decisions about what to cut.
