BIG IDEA:
Technological design is a creative process that anyone can do which may result in new inventions and innovations.
Populations of organisms evolve by natural selection.
Living things depend on their habitat to meet their basic needs.
ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS:
How is technological design and problem solving used when creating innovations?
What allows some populations of organisms to change and survive while others cannot?
What factors affect an organism's ability to meet its needs?
OVERVIEW:
As the project manager of a new aquarium, you will work to design and create the plan of the proposed aquarium design. You will research the requirements necessary to create the desired set-up. You will use your biological knowledge of the various animal phyla to choose a variety of specimens that can be survive in your aquarium. You will develop graphics and displays that explain the diversity displayed in your set-up, including the evolutionary relationships if appropriate for included specimens. You must observe and analyze the given aquarium to determine if the abiotic and biotic factors in the aquarium are sufficient for sustaining the environment for an extended amount of time.
GOAL:
Your task is to design, create, and potentially maintain an aquatic set-up that contains living specimens from various animal phyla. This set-up will be a new aquarium located in a large mall. This aquarium will be based upon the Dubai Aquarium. Your challenge is to create an environment that can sustain and display the diversity found in an aquatic environment, and be able to explain how energy circulates through the system.
ROLE:
You are the project manager of an aquarium. Your responsibilities will include the role of director of exhibits and graphics. You will need to use your biological knowledge to design and maintain aquariums that exhibit the various phyla. You will be responsible for creating and managing the displays surrounding the environments.
AUDIENCE:
The audience will be comprised of potential donors for the aquarium and members of the community who will serve as a focus group.

PRODUCTS:
Create an advertisement promoting your aquarium that is targeted to young people who have an interest in marine organisms. Your advertisement can be completed as a brochure, flyer, television ad, etc. What is most important is that you provide your target audience with lots of scientific information about your displays. Discuss how the different animal phylum, classes, orders, families, genus, and species in your aquarium are related. Also include information about where on the planet the different marine animals and fish can be found and what considerations must be taken into consideration when creating an artificial habitat.
Food Web
Create a food web for your aquarium that includes a minimum of three levels of producers and consumers. The food web should indicate the top level of the food web and each lower level. Be sure to connect each organism that interacts through a food chain and the overall food web. This food web will be very important to help organisms survive as you create your aquatic habitat. The food web should also have a narrative that describes each component including their place in the food web and how they contribute to the flow of energy into and/or out of the ecosystem.
Models
Create a scale model/computer draft of your aquarium design. Your model must include both the scaled and actual dimensions. Also include the location of items within the tank that will help the ecosystem sustain itself, can enhance the ecosystem and add to the visual appeal of the aquarium.
Oral Presentation
You will need to create a 3-5 minute oral, multimedia presentation explaining the process used to design, develop, and maintain your aquarium set-up. This presentation will be given to potential donors for the aquarium and members of the community serving as a focus group to determine the feasibility of the proposed design. The use of specific dimensions of the aquarium and specific list of specimens that will be used must be given. Two of the other products must be included in your presentation that supports the feasibility and biological application of your aquarium.
