BIG IDEA:
Genetic information provides for the continuity of life and in most cases is passed from parent to offspring through DNA.
Chemical reactions are predictable.
Relations and functions are mathematical relationships that can be represented and analyzed using words, tables, graphs and equations.
Adherence to the rule of law validates an individual's responsibility to society.
ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS:
How does genetic information connect parent and offspring?
What factors identify the types of chemical reactions?
How can we demonstrate that algebraic properties and processes are extensions of mathematical properties and processes, and how can we use algebraic properties and processes to solve problems?
OVERVIEW:
The district attorney's office and regional law enforcement are teaming up to create a crime scene investigation unit. The purpose of this new unit will be to gather evidence in a more scientific manner, and to provide more valuable evidence to the district attorney's office in order to help them convict criminals. For this unit to be successful, the investigators will need to understand the scientific background of evidence-gathering, as well as the appropriate tools to help them gather the evidence. Additionally, they will need to understand how the evidence gathered is typically used in a criminal trial.
GOAL:
Your goal is to help educate and equip a local, regional police department with the skills and tools necessary to start their own crime scene investigation unit. This project will be done in coordination with the district attorney's office.
ROLE:
You have been hired by the district attorney's office and the regional police force to help educate the police officers on basic crime scene investigation tools and tactics. Both groups plan to jointly create a crime scene investigation unit within the regional police force.
AUDIENCE:
Your audience will be members of the district attorney's office and regional law enforcement personnel, including the individuals assigned to the new crime scene investigation unit.

PRODUCTS:
Materials and Equipment List
Create a list of the three most important tasks carried out by a regional police crime lab. Next, research the tools and equipment needed to carry out these tasks. Develop a list of essential equipment with an explanation of why each item is important. This list will be used to make purchasing decisions for opening up your crime lab.
Editorial
Write an editorial in favor of more funding for a police crime scene unit. A good place to start would be by listing the benefits that a crime-scene unit would add to a community. Citizens will want to know how many more crimes are solved as a result of having this unit, the percentage improvement in crimes solved, and the number of dollars spent per additional crime solved.
Multimedia Presentation
Prepare a multimedia presentation that teaches the viewer about the fingerprinting process, DNA collection process, gathering and testing blood to determine blood type and/or some other key jobs of crime scene investigators. Your slides should be a step-by-step tutorial on how the process is carried out and should contain written descriptions to assist the viewer. Bulleted lists may be a good method of communicating the different steps.
